A needs assessment is a critical information tool that helps hospitals and other service organizations understand the health status, characteristics, perceptions and concerns of their communities.
A well-conceived and appropriately conducted needs assessment links the community and the organization by initiating dialogue that can lead to a more effective provision of services and customer satisfaction. Valuable information includes health status measures including disease incidence and prevalence; health services utilization; preventive health practices; perceived needs; consumer attitudes toward availability, quality and accessibility; barriers to receipt and delivery of care; provider capabilities; and capacities and gaps in service. In addition to gathering health status information, NSI offers a variety of approaches aimed at obtaining qualitative and quantitative information. These include:
- Standardized or custom consumer surveys relevant to the specific population under study;
- Focus groups aimed at understanding variations in opinions, perceptions and needs, and at gaining creative ideas and solutions;
- Key informant interviews aimed at gathering information from experts in the field;
- Provider inventories to identify available services within a specific region as well as their capacity and capabilities.
